Smart meter installation firm, Blue Square Utilities has confirmed the creation of 60 new jobs, and made five internal promotions, in a bid to support sustained growth into 2021 following several significant contract wins.
The recruitment drive – which began in July and is expected to run until the end of 2020 – has focused on building its roster of engineers and schedulers, as well as growing the administration and leadership teams.
Tyne and Wear-headquartered Blue Square Utilities has created positions across the North East, North West, and Yorkshire – with a number of roles still available. And, with two more client contracts currently in negotiation, the firm expects to announce a large number of further vacancies by Q1 of 2021.
Notable appointments include finance manager, Michael Lynn – who also joins the leadership team – alongside field team leaders Mark Dodd and John Shaw, with John returning to Blue Square Utilities following a year out of the business.
A quintet of internal promotions, meanwhile, sees field services manager Greg Nesbitt and client relationship manager Brian Robertson joining the senior leadership team, Dan Oldham and Martin Drinkwater both appointed as field team leaders, while Ian Wright has been promoted to logistics manager.
Steve Lees, Blue Square Utilities’ CEO said: “After a difficult start to the year, we have recommenced installations of smart meters across the north of England which, in turn, has meant we needed to recruit a significant number of engineers.
“Since July, we’ve welcomed 60 people to the team, and have seen the management team increase by 15% – this all feeds into supporting our ambitious growth plans, and a timely delivery for several new contract wins. While there’s still a way to go, we’re hopeful for a busy 2021.”
The news follows Blue Square Utilities being appointed to assist with the roll-out of domestic smart meters to Scottish Power customers across the North East and Yorkshire.
Supporting the government’s plan to ensure gas and electricity suppliers take all reasonable steps to provide smart meters for domestic and small business customers by the end of 2024 – extended from its initial 2020 deadline – the contract will generate £2.5m of income per annum for Blue Square Utilities.
