Huddersfield’s Northern Quarter, with the support of Let’s Go Yorkshire as part of the TOWNSOUNDS project, will be hosting a Christmas market on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th December to encourage Kirklees residents to shop local this festive season.
The market, which will take place between 6pm and 9pm on Wood Street, will feature a range of stalls offering shoppers the opportunity to shop from local independents and will feature vintage and handmade clothing, arts and crafts, mulled wine and seasonal beer.
To get shoppers in the seasonal spirit, there will be live performances throughout both evenings. The Huddersfield Community Gospel Choir will take to the stage during the events, along with a live DJ set from DJ Turnip. Huddersfield’s cultural and unique Parang band Mash It Up will also be performing on the first evening of the market, from 7pm.
Mash It Up band are the only local band that performs Parang, a much loved musical style from Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique that is typically performed during the festive period. Mash It Up has been performing together since the 1970’s, when members of the band settled in Huddersfield during the Windrush movement. The band are currently rehearsing ahead of their annual Christmas Day parade, which will see the string band go from house to house throughout Huddersfield, performing along the way.
