Wizu Workspace has completed renovations on the landmark Grade II listed building, 46 Park Place in Leeds, which has a long, rich history of championing diversity and challenging norms.
Park Place, boasts elegant, boutique style interiors, with eye-catching artwork and bespoke handmade furniture pieces.
The historic building, with its distinct dome banding and gothic revival arches, was once home to Sovereign Chambers, one of the largest barristers on the North Eastern circuit, who’s legacy dates back to the 1920s.
It’s founder, Alter Max Hurwitz, chose to defy norms and set up his own chambers, after he was unable to secure a tenancy due to the discrimination that surrounded minorities and women at that time.
By the 1970’s Hurwitz had created a diverse team of 12 which included Louise Godfrey - the first woman to lead the North Eastern Circuit and to be appointed ‘Recorder’ in Leeds - and was one of the first in the region to welcome a person of colour as a member.
The majority of members were also state-educated northerners - which was a fry cry from the stereotypical public image of a barrister at the time.
