Yorkshire History Prize to celebrate a great Yorkshireman
The Yorkshire Society’s Harry Gration History Prize 2023 is now open for entries.
Named in tribute to the late Harry Gration, broadcaster, presenter and enthusiastic advocate of all things Yorkshire, The Yorkshire Society Harry Gration History Prize is aimed at both young and older amateur historians, keen to undertake a piece of original research about any aspect of Yorkshire history – from the time of the Brigantes to the present.
All entrants have to do is produce a short essay, based on their original research, to be in with a chance to win the prestigious prize including a certificate, publication of the winning essays on the Yorkshire Society website and a share of the cash prize of £250. There will also be widespread press and PR coverage with the Prize being awarded at the Yorkshire Heritage Summit in Saltaire on 18th May 2023.
There are two categories of entry – the Youth Prize for young historians up to the age of 18 who must submit an essay of at least 1,000 words and a maximum of 5,000. The Open Prize, for over 18s - with no age limit - who must contribute a minimum of 1,500 and maximum of 10,000 words.
The competition is being organised by The Yorkshire Society in collaboration with the University of Huddersfield. Competition entries will be judged by a small team of eminent Yorkshire writers and historians. Entrants who are shortlisted may have to provide proof of original work and verification of authorship.
Deadline for entries in electronic format (Word or PDF) is 1st March 2023.
