Long-serving BPL employee, Jenny Mitchell, has switched off her calculator for the final time, as she retires, with over forty years’ of service to the Metrodome.
Those 42 years have added up to lots of memories and achievements for the dedicated finance office manager who is going to be sorely missed.
And the feeling is mutual as Jenny explains: “The girls from the department have been a great part of my life throughout my time at BPL, they’ve brought laughter and joy into my life. I didn’t realise how regarded I was, I will miss them terribly.”
Jenny has been at the heart of the company and seen a lot of change over the years. Her career began as a Clerical Assistant for Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council from 1976 to 1999. She continued work with the council through a multitude of roles, including administration assistant, administration officer and finally senior finance officer, the title she would keep as an employee with BMBC, before transferring to BPL in July 1999. A couple of years later, she became the Finance Office Manager, the position she held on her retirement.
Human resources manager Ronnie Erskine, who hosted an awards ceremony at which Jenny received a special recognition award, said: “Jenny is passionate about her role. She is very meticulous in everything that she does. Always going the extra mile to pass on her knowledge and experience to all the members of the finance team.”
As a result of Jenny’s passion and enthusiasm, she won the BPL Ambassador of the Year, back in 2013.
Ronnie added: “After 42 years’ continuous service to BPL and the leisure Industry, Jenny has become a very valuable asset to BPL in her job role as Finance Office Manager. Her team, friends and colleagues will miss her enthusiasm, commitment and dedication to the role. She will be sorely missed by us all at BPL, and we wish her all the very best in her retirement.”
Jenny plans to make the most of her retirement, by spending plenty of time taking care of her beloved grandson, Jackson.
A former performing arts student and a keen lover of all things artistic, she will be pursuing her interests in photography, English studies and art, putting her fantastic creative flair to use, as well as continuing her position as a singer in the local choir.
