Dudleys secures further brief at Leeds Bradford Airport
Dudleys Consulting Engineers has secured a new brief to carry out inspection works for key infrastructure including radar masts at Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA). This is alongside its ongoing expert engineering consultancy on the second phase of works to support the £100 million terminal upgrade plans.
Standing 30 ft tall, the radar masts at LBA are critical to supporting air traffic control operations covering 40 nautical miles and 10,000 feet. They house equipment essential for an advanced ATC system, allowing for improved airspace management and safety.
Dudleys, which was recently awarded Yorkshire’s best consultancy of the year, has been supporting LBA for more than fifteen years, advising across the entire estate including airside aprons, building alterations, car parking areas, masts, and tunnels as well as the public buildings. The practice has worked with LBA since 2018 to specifically support design proposals for the extension through planning processes.
With the phase one new-build terminal building now operational, phase two is now underway with a major refurbishment and upgrade of facilities within the existing terminal. This includes the reconfiguration of various buildings, to deliver a more modern, open plan facility for an improved customer experience.
The works will deliver a new security hall and arrivals area with significant improvements made to the check-in, security, duty free shops, amenity and food outlets leading to additional aircraft stands.
Andy Walker, managing director at Dudleys, said, “We have been a trusted advisor to the LBA estate for many years and as such our historic knowledge and experience of the site has proved invaluable in helping LBA to deliver its exciting upgrades and maintain existing infrastructure.
“The repurposing of existing buildings supports LBA’s important sustainability agenda, but the works are not without challenges. We are working with the design team to reconfigure a series of buildings of varying decades and build composition to provide a seamless, state of the art terminal with future proof qualities.
“Our strategic advice supports the delivery of new staircases, escalators, lifts and walkways as well as important integration with the new building. A critical part of the programme is the deliver these works in a ‘live’ environment to help minimise disruption to customers."
