Blue Square Utilities will support the roll-out of domestic smart meters to Scottish Power customers across the North East and Yorkshire following a successful tender with Amey – which will create roles for over 50 dual fuel engineers.

Tyne and Wear-headquartered Blue Square Utilities has already transferred 42 installers from Amey and is looking to recruit a further 15 engineers from across the Yorkshire region – doubling its headcount in the process.

Supporting the government’s plan to ensure gas and electricity suppliers take all reasonable steps to provide smart meters for domestic and small business customers by the end of 2024 – extended from its initial 2020 deadline – the contract will generate £2.5m of income per annum for Blue Square Utilities.

Steve Lees, Blue Square Utilities’ CEO said: “There is no getting away from the fact that 2020 has been a difficult period for many organisations – and we certainly haven’t been immune from that. We do, however, have big plans for growth and recruitment, and this project forms a significant part of our three-year strategy.

“With sustainability at the forefront of people’s minds, we want to play our part in improving the energy efficiency of the country and delivering on the UK’s green energy targets, while developing and growing as a company.”

Matthew Hogarth, account director at Amey added: “This year has brought some unexpected challenges, so I am pleased that Amey has been able to work with Blue Square Utilities to ensure continuity of service for our engineers, clients, and their customers during this unprecedented time. We are proud of our contribution to the local community, from creating jobs to helping improve household energy consumption.”

With operations across the Midlands, North East, North West, Yorkshire and Scotland, the announcement follows a number of key appointments at the end of 2019. MOCOPA-accredited Blue Square Utilities revealed Steve Lees as the new company CEO, Moray Martin as the new chairman and Richard Burns joined the board of directors.
