Acumen awarded HFO tank farm decommissioning project
Specialist waste management and industrial site services provider Acumen, has been awarded the significant South Bank Wharf Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) Tank Farm decommissioning project at Teesworks creating 20 new jobs.
As principal contractor on this standalone project Acumen’s award includes the remnant product waste removal, decontamination and demolition of the redundant infrastructure associated with the HFO Tank Farm, most notably five large tanks (with a combined capacity of 60 million litres), two boiler houses and all associated pipework. The project has already commenced and is expected to finish by the end of 2020.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, commented: “Acumen is a great example of a company that is going that extra mile to not only create local jobs for local people but do everything they can to support businesses and communities on Teesside. It is brilliant to see them being involved with such a huge demolition project, employing local people with well-paid jobs and reinvesting into our region at the same time. We are getting to work with our plans to demolish and deliver. The scale of this project is mammoth and to see it first-hand is incredible.”
Teesworks is the new development and delivery arm of the South Tees Development Corporation, the first Mayoral Development Corporation outside of London and was established to promote the economic growth and commercial development of Tees Valley by converting assets in the South Tees area into opportunities for business investment and economic growth. The STDC area covers approximately 4,500 acres of land to the south of the River Tees and includes former SSI steelworks site as well as other industrial assets. The work to remove the defunct HFO Tank Farm is an integral part of the STDC’s action plan and is yet further evidence of the efforts being made to revolutionise the area.
Lauren Hill, Acumen Technical Director said: “It’s great to work with the Teesworks team on this iconic site and we’re pleased that Acumen was chosen to deliver this milestone project for them. We are delivering this complex decommissioning opportunity from our regional depot in North Ormesby, using a local workforce and with the moniker #totallyteesside – what better a way to demonstrate Acumen’s B.E.S.T. commitment to the regions and communities we live and work within”
Acumen’s B.E.S.T. initiative is a hugely important part of the commitment Acumen has to the regions and communities they live and work within. The initiative was inspired and developed by the team at Acumen as part of their longstanding pledge to enhance the lives, economy and environments of staff, customers and local stakeholders. B.E.S.T. is Acumen’s dedication to “Buy, Employ, Support and Transform” and fundamental to these four principles is that this is from and for of the communities Acumen works within.
The HFO Tank Farm decommissioning project fits perfectly within Acumen’s commitment to keep things #totallyteeside by continually re-investing in the region and community upon which the business was established over a quarter of a century ago.
