£700 has been raised by Sheards Accountants for its charity of the year, Huddersfield-based The Welcome Centre, in place of the charity curry night.

The funds were raised from tickets sales from the annual event, which was due to take place in April at popular Indian restaurant The Chilli Lounge, which was unfortunately cancelled because of COVID-19.

Due to the uncertainty of a future date and with news of how stretched the Welcome Centre were, attendees were given the option to donate the cost of the ticket to the charity, with the accountancy firm matching the total amount donated. Sheards were overwhelmed by the support being shown as 100% of the responses were to donate.

Kevin Winterburn, director said: “The whole office and local business community really look forward to our annual curry night. It’s a night of good fun, great food and a good fundraising event for The Welcome Centre. The last few months have been particularly difficult for the charity so we felt we needed to do something to support them. We are really grateful for all who have supported us in this decision.”

Emma Greenough, fundraising manager at The Welcome Centre said: "These last few months have been a challenge for us all at The Welcome Centre as we have continued to support people in crisis via a delivery service. Missing out on great events like the Sheards Curry night was a real disappointment, but we're hugely grateful to everyone who donated their ticket money to us and to Carolyn and Kevin for match funding the donation from Sheards.

“The support from Sheards as a charity partner over the last 18 months has been fantastic and this donation of £700 will help us support all those new clients that have come to us during the last 16 weeks. "
