130th anniversary for sign company

Leeds-based branded environment specialist Widd Signs is celebrating its 130th anniversary as the company aims for further growth with continued expansion into new sectors.

Established in 1888 on Grattan Road in Bradford by teenage sign writer Arthur Widd, the company quickly established itself as a respected architectural and interior signage company.

Its first customers included brewers John Smith’s and Joshua Tetley & Sons, as well as food manufacturer William Jackson.

Today, Widd Signs counts international retailers Primark, Schuh, Marks & Spencer and Levi’s; Premier League football club Burnley; and the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford amongst its clients.

Based in a purpose-built 30,000 sq m facility on Gelderd Road, Widd Signs has a multi-million pound turnover and works both nationally and internationally. The company designs, produces and implements a range of bespoke in-store, directional, LED and external signage and other branded environments.

Utilising a range of high technology manufacturing processes and a highly skilled workforce in the creation of its signage, Widd Signs also provides an industry-leading maintenance and aftercare service.

Commenting on the anniversary, Widd Signs head of operations, Rory Campbell-Pilling, said: “Widd Signs has a rich and enterprising history. Our founder started out at a time when sign writing was all freelance, but he had the vision to see commercial opportunity in setting up one of the first signage businesses. That entrepreneurial spirit still drives the company today.

“Technology and trends change over time, but our focus on master craftsmanship and providing intelligent, impactful signage remains the same and underpins our ongoing success.”

As it targets another phase of growth, Widd Signs is seeking to expand further within retail whilst also securing additional opportunities within the property, construction, leisure, hospitality, automotive and education sectors.
