New radio station for Wakefield and the 5 Towns

A new community radio station – Valley Radio – is to be launched from studio’s based in Castleford, West Yorkshire. The aim is to provide a local radio service via an online channel for the people of Wakefield and the 5 Towns area.

Leading the station are Jon Butler and Gareth Smith who have spent many years planning the station which goes live on Saturday the 1st April 2017.

While the station will initially begin broadcasting online which can be received on digital wifi radio sets and also smartphone and tablet using the free to download Tunein app, and also the free Valley Radio app from the App Store and Google play there are plans in place to bring the station onto the DAB service in 2018 so the station can be heard on any DAB radio sets.

One of Valley Radio’s Directors Jon Butler says: “Our aim is to give listeners an alternative to the diet of non-stop pop hits and wall-to-wall generic commercials and playlist repeats heard on so many other stations. We are a local station for local people. Valley Radio will broadcast a great mix of music from across the decades and our presenters really want to engage with the local communities so the station reflects what they want to hear, and that includes both music, local commercials and news of local events, along with coverage of the local grass roots sports teams.”

“Valley radio will be ‘truly’ local radio like it used to be and how it should be. We are fully licensed, and our team of dedicated volunteers are looking forward to serving the community.”

Jon says the station has been in the planning stage for two years and represents a huge amount of work from committed local residents with experience in radio production, journalism, audio production and other key roles essential for a successful radio station.

“We have been in touch with various local charities that would love to be involved and we are all working together to bring Wakefield and the 5 Towns an informative, entertaining and highly valuable local radio service” says Jon.

Plans for the new station include bringing people and communities together, sharing news on air and on the station’s website at as well as helping to promote events, commentary, history, insight and other engaging topics relevant to local listeners across Wakefield and the 5 Towns and its culture.

“Listeners will enjoy a wide range of content, with music from the swinging sound of the ’60s right up to chart music from the modern day,” says Jon. “Listeners are encouraged to get involved with content ideas and news that other local people will be interested in, and the editorial team is on hand to discuss any possible content or programme ideas – the door is even open to people who want to be part of our team through our training programme.”

Valley Radio can be heard at, or tune in via the free TuneIn [] mobile app.
