Accountancy firm raises £5k for charity

A team of 11 partners and directors at York and Leeds-based accountancy firm Garbutt + Elliott has raised more than £5,000 after tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

The fundraising event forms part of a year-long campaign by the firm to raise much-needed funds for local charities York Against Cancer and the Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal.

The team scaled the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough on the 24-mile route in just over ten hours despite difficult conditions.

Nigel Shaw, partner and head of corporate social responsibility at Garbutt + Elliott, who led the team, said: “All of us found the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge a difficult, but ultimately rewarding, experience and we are delighted with the amount of money we raised for our two charity partners, which has got our fundraising efforts off to a great start.

“Both charities offer fantastic support to individuals and families in Yorkshire and are heavily reliant on donations to continue providing services, so we are very proud to be able to contribute in this way.”

Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal aims to make the wards, theatres, parent waiting rooms and day case areas of the Leeds Children’s Hospital as child and family friendly as possible.

Sharon Evans, fundraising development manager at Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal, said “A massive well done to everyone who took part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks and to all who sponsored so generously. Here in Leeds over 250,000 children are treated each year through our wards and outpatient departments, every penny that has been donated will make a real difference to lives of these young patients, making their hospital experience a positive one for them and their families.”

York Against Cancer is a small, independent charity that provides help and support for cancer patients and their families in York and North Yorkshire, as well as funding vital research and education programmes aimed at preventing and curing cancer in the future.

Julie Russell, general manager at York Against Cancer, said: “We are full of admiration for the plucky walkers of Garbutt + Elliott for tackling such a tough challenge. Raising more than £5,000 is a magnificent achievement and the money will make a real difference to our work.”
